Our impact

How we make a positive contribution

We’re deeply invested in the communities we’re part of. We train the next generation of Armed Forces personnel. Many of our staff are ex-military. And our parent organisation is a long-standing FE institution.

That’s created a lot of connections. So we work actively to do the right thing for people locally, in the wider defence sector, and beyond. Wherever we can make a positive impact.

The Armed Forces Covenant

The Armed Forces Covenant is a UK national promise centred around two principles: that serving and ex-Armed Forces personnel and their families should face no disadvantage compared to other citizens in the provision of public and commercial services, and that they should sometimes have special consideration, especially those who have given most, such as the injured and the bereaved.

The covenant covers Regulars, Reservists, Cadet instructors, veterans, their families, and the bereaved. It also encourages businesses to be Forces-friendly employers. MKC Training has been part of the employer recognition scheme for over 8 years, progressing from silver to gold certification. We recognise the Covenant in HR policies such as granting extra leave for Reservists to attend camps, and advocate for the Covenant by hosting events to raise awareness and bringing like-minded organisations together.

We have a partnership with the South East Reserve Forces’ and Cadets’ Association (SERFCA), which plays a key role in regional support, connecting local, regional, and business communities with the services. We’re also part of a skills taskforce to try and ensure service leavers moving into Kent have the broadest knowledge of opportunities in the area.

Supporting our local community

Unlike many defence training organisations, all profits from MKC Training are reinvested into our parent organisation, MidKent College and our local community. This enables us to give back in numerous ways. For example, we’ve helped support vulnerable people in the local area to get qualifications. We take on interns and apprentices. We sponsor sports teams. It’s all about being active in our community. We are able to support the college with extra teaching capacity when required. We invite local schools to our facilities and provide insights into the training with a focus on STEM subjects. We provide outreach to schools, supporting The BIG STEM Challenge through partnered sponsorship. In 2025 we built a new experiential play area for a local Infants school, enabling fun play and development of motor skills.

We also support local events and charities including the local Rotary Club dragon boat race, make combined annual charity donations, and support our employees to volunteer at charities each year.

Embedding sustainability in our business

We are an environmentally conscious organisation and support local and national sustainability strategies. We have a Carbon Reduction Plan to achieve Net Zero by 2050, and energy and resource targets that we record and monitor within our Objective & Key Result framework and dashboard.

We take action to eliminate or reduce, as far as practicable, pollution and any of our other potentially adverse environmental impacts. And we implement, maintain, and continually improve an ISO 14001 environmental management system to enhance our environmental performance and sustainability. We are transitioning company vehicles from diesel to electric, and we offer employees an electric car scheme.
