What is the ILM for Construction certificate?
The ILM for Construction level 3 certificate is a nationally recognised leadership qualification for construction site managers and supervisors.
This course will teach you the basic leadership and management skills required to help you better lead your teams. You will identify the strengths and weaknesses of both yourself and your company and develop action plans and tools to improve performance, avoid mistakes of the trade and, learn what makes a good manager.
Who is the ILM for Construction course for?
This level 3 ILM for Construction certificate qualification is an entry level qualification for anyone with management responsibilities but no formal qualification. This qualification is particularly suited to practising team leaders seeking to move up to the next level of management, and managers who need to lead people through organisational change, budget cuts or other pressures.
This non-technical qualification is aimed at supervisors, team leaders, foremen and site managers looking to gain a thorough understanding of leadership and management principles to effectively lead, supervise and safely manage staff in the built environment and construction industry.
Course format
To complete this ILM for Construction course you will be required to undertake 15 to 36 credits worth of modules for the certificate and between 2 and 14 credits for the award.
- Award level: you will be required to complete 2-days of training and then complete 2 assignments.
- Certificate level: you will be required to complete an additional 3-days of training and you will need to complete 3 assignments.
You will receive your ILM in Construction qualification once you have completed all the necessary assignments. The two mandatory modules:
- 8626-300 Leadership and Management Practice for the Construction and Built Environment Sector
This module will help you to develop your management skills specifically in the construction sector. You will learn techniques that can be used within other industries as well as techniques which will be specific to the built environment sector. - 8626-301 Delivery of Site Operations and Logistics
One of the main duties for a manager within the construction industry is being able to understand logistics and use them effectively to ensure the smooth running of site operations. This module will teach you how to deal with logistics on site and how to deliver to specified site operations.
And the 3 modules below:
- 8626-302 Understanding Commercial Awareness
This module will help a manager within any sector. Every manager will need to be commercially aware and know when a project is not commercially viable, when you might need to bring in more equipment and what to charge or pay for it. - 8626-303 Handling Difficult Situations
A difficult situation can be anything from a disgruntled employee to problems with equipment on site. This module will teach you how to not only deal with the situation but also how to solve it. - Unit 8262-305 Achieving Performance Through People
The aim of this module is to develop knowledge and understanding of using leadership and inter-personal skills to establish effective teams and achieve high levels of performance through people.
You must complete the ILM for Construction (part 1) award in order to attend the ILM for Construction (part 2) certificate course. You will need to be in a construction related workplace to complete the assignments.
We highly recommend that delegates already hold, or are working towards, one or more of the following qualifications. These meet the industry standard requirements to be able to work on site:
- CSCS Blue Card
- White Yellow PQP Card
- CITB Health, safety and environment test
- Site Management Safety Training Scheme (SMSTS)
- Construction Plant Competence Scheme (CPCS) Card
- You also need a good understanding of spoken and written English
- You will need to provide a valid form of ID on the first day of the course, such as a copy of your passport or driving licence.

- Use logistics to their advantage when working on projects
- Understand commercial awareness
- Solve problems on and off site

The certificate can be undertaken to gain a nationally recognised qualification to support you in obtaining the Academically Qualified Person (AQP) card through the Construction Skills Certification Scheme (CSCS).
